Chapter 13

The next morning Ellie woke with a start when she heard a loud thump. She sat bolt upright in bed and tried to look through the darkness, she fumbled for the light and flicked the switch. She found Kate on the floor rubbing her left leg with tears running down her cheeks.

“Honey what happened?! Are you ok? She leapt from the bed and took Kate’s hands to gently lift her from the floor. She sat her on the bed and had a look at her leg.

“I’m fine Ellie, my leg just went from under me when I was going for some water. I must have been walking too much recently, I should have been using my stick more.”

“Does it hurt? Is there anything I can do?” Ellie asked wishing above all else that she could take this pain from Kate.

“It hurts but there’s nothing we can do about it; I’m just going to have to rest it a bit more.” Kate wiped tears away impatiently, she hated crying.

“Well todays trip is a coach tour around Rome, no walking involved so at least that will help.” Ellie tried to cheer her up, she knew Kate had been looking forward to seeing Rome.

“Are you coming on the trip?” Kate asked hopefully

“No, I’m sorry honey I need to call Gavin and get more information, but your mum and Peggy will be with you and trust me there are no better bodyguards in the world. I’ll have my phone with me so you can video chat whenever you get time. If I get this stuff done today, then I can go to Pompeii tomorrow.”

“OK, that seems a fair trade. You’re right, this trip will be easier on me than walking around this ship all day would be. I’ll bring you back a present”

“So long as you come back in one piece and not too tired then I’ll be happy.” Ellie smiled and so did Kate. Ellie had been gently massaging the muscles in Kate’s leg to try to get them relaxed. She could feel the spasms underneath her fingers and knew that Kate was hurting more than she let on.

“Do you want me to grab you some breakfast so you can eat here and rest until you need to go?” Kate nodded happily “That would be lovely, just a coffee and some pancakes would be perfect.”

“Consider it done” Ellie pulled on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, slipped into her trainers and headed to the breakfast buffet before the hordes arrived. She returned within 10 mins with a tray full of pancakes, French toast, coffee, and orange juice.

“You’re an angel” groaned Kate as she grabbed a coffee and some French toast.

“Don’t spread that rumour around, I’ve got a reputation to uphold.” Ellie smiled as he picked up her own coffee and switched on the news. They were making their way through the stack of pancakes when Kate suddenly pointed at the tv.

“Ellie turn it up!”

“What’s wrong” asked Ellie alarmed as she fumbled for the remote to turn it up.
